Wisdom Tooth Extraction
This procedure is for getting rid of an impacted wisdom tooth. Wisdom teeth are often fine left but can sometimes cause pain and pericoronitis (infection of the wisdom tooth and gum around it) in which case it must be removed.
What Does The Treatment Involve?
- The first stage is to carry out a 3D Digital X-ray of the mouth to get a clear view of the tooth position.
- You’ll be given a local anaesthetic injection to numb the area around the tooth.
- The tooth socket will need to be widened by rocking the tooth back and forth.
- A small incision in the gum may be necessary and the tooth may need to be cut into smaller pieces before it’s removed.
All in all, the process usually takes anywhere from a few minutes to 20 minutes, occasionally longer. After it's all done, you may experience some swelling and discomfort, both inside and outside your mouth, which can last up to 2 weeks. But don't worry, you'll be back to your old self in no time!

The main complication when removing wisdom teeth is nerve damage which can cause permanent loss of sensation in the lower lip forever. This is why using a CBCT scanner is so incredibly important, a 2D scan doesn’t give a clear enough picture and could show that the tooth and nerve is in the same path when it isn’t.
